Massive demonstrations were held this morning in several parts of the country against a resolution to be presented against Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Prime Minister D.M Jayaratne, speaking at one of the rallies, said that some people are ready to sacrifice their lives against moves to infringe on Sri Lanka’s soverignity. Demonstrations were held in Batticaloa, Kandy, Hambantota, Ratnapura, Je-Ela and Dambulla, among other areas, this morning. Meanwhile a demonstration was also staged near the American Embassy in Colombo today. Security was tight and the road opposite the Embassy was closed during the protest.A massive demonstration is also scheduled to take place in Colombo this afternoon against the proposed resolution. According to reports the United States will present a resolution against Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council session which begins in Geneva today demanding that the government implement all the recommendations of a war commission appointed by Sri Lanka itself and to also hold accountable those responsible for committing human rights abuses. The Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith in a statement this morning also condemned attempts to submit a resolution against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC.Meanwhile the External Affairs Ministry said that heavy diplomatic campaigning was underway both in Geneva, Switzerland and in other countries in support and against Sri Lanka.“External Affairs Minister G.L Peiris has already met several diplomats in Geneva and will be meeting more in other countries over the next few days,” a spokesman at the Ministry said.

Due to this sponsor we have achieved what we achieved. The competition is full of joy, pleasure and excitement,” Mihajlovski said, adding: “We are on the right way, just remember, how the SEHA league started and how it is now.”Mihajlovski pointed out that SEHA -Gazprom League is represented by three teams in the quarter-finals of the EHF Champions League – Veszprem, Vardar and Zagreb. In addition, Meshkov were among the best 16, besides Vojvodina and Tatran part of the group phase of the Champions League.“We stand for the best of handball, and thanks to the ongoing support of Gazprom, we want to achieve to be on an equal level with German Bundesliga and even pass this league in future,” said Mihajlovski.The President of the SEHA – Gazprom League later-on summarized the additional results of the general assembly, held in Varazdin:Slovenian sides RK Pivovarna Lasko Celje and Gorenje Velenje are supposed to join the SEHA Gazprom League in the upcoming season after the approvals of Slovenian league and Slovenian Federation. The final approval needs to be given by the Slovenian club assembly. MVM Veszprem have 15 days time to inform the headquarters of the SEHA – Gazprom League if they will participate in the SEHA – Gazprom League 2016/17 season. The SEHA – Gazprom League will consist of ten teams in the 2016/17 season. Boris Saposchnikov replaces Agron Hajredin as Vice-President of SEHA – Gazprom League.In a short speech, EHF Secretary General Michael Wiederer, who was guest of honour in Varazdin, praised the cooperation with the SEHA – Gazprom League: “This league is well recognized partner of the European Handball Federation. The SEHA clubs are very important part of the Champions League. We support the idea of the SEHA League and will continue our cooperation.”
